thinking a lot today about how it feels like YA publishing specifically is only interested in stories about Black people and racism, that white and non-Black readers are only interested in those stories, that these are the books we have to write if we want to make it
Nic Stone posted a really raw video on Instagram today and I can't stop thinking about it. I've spoken to other Black authors about how it feels like we can't be successful unless we write about racism or police brutality but to see it confirmed... it's so painful.
It's one thing to say you support Black writers and it's another thing entirely to buy their books that aren't about racism, that aren't about police brutality, to promote them, to read them the way you read books you expect to teach you how to be better.
It makes me really depressed honestly to know that authors like Nic feel like they have to monetize their trauma in order to be successful. And that's not coming from nowhere. It's coming from the way people respond to books. It's just... makes me so sad.
