Suggestions for online job talks, a thread.
1. Expect that even people who care may not give full attention. It’s not disrespect—it’s just a new reality.
2. Slow down. It’s easy for us to miss a word. And get lost.
3. Put the main meaning of each slide in text at the top.
4. Say what you will find at the start of each study. Then repeat and go into more detail in the results.
5. Cut down the methods. And slow down when you go through these.
6. One finding per slide, or do a build. Say the finding in text.
7. Give me some data within 5 mins.
8. Cut down on what you plan to present.
9. Expect people can read every word. So no 14 point font on slides. And if there are more than 30 words, it may be too much.
10. Job talks are hard but this online version is harder on all of us. We are rooting for you!
Good luck. 🏆
