I genuinely believe that we need to have a “me too movement” within the gay community in Ireland (most specifically the greater dublin area). (THREAD)
it’s been almost a year since we’ve been able to go to George or any other queer space and I think we as a community haven’t actually taken the chance to break down how many horrible things have happened to our queer brothers and sisters in our own clubs (1)
countless friends and mutuals of mine have had horrible things happen to them in the gay scene in Dublin (that in retrospect they have understood to be sexual assaults). And I know that multiple people that share the same abuser. (2)
we as a community have both actively and passively ignored and moved on from truly terrible things that have happened to us. Before we get the vaccine and our clubs reopen I really want a conversation to be had about our safety in our own bars. (3)
predatory behaviour is rampant within our community whether we like it or not. initially after my own assault, I brushed it off as something that “happens to everyone”. But, it shouldn’t. (4)
we can’t ignore this conversation again. When clubs open up again there will be potentially 2 new cohorts of 18/19 year old queer people entering our clubs for the first time. we MUST ensure that they are safe. (5)
we are lucky in some twisted sense that clubs are closed for us to actually take a moment and evaluate our own experiences. How many more of our friends need to be touched without permission or manipulated into disgusting situations. (END)
