1. Surgeon caffeine intake prior to microsurgery is a controversial topic (that as far as I can tell hasn’t been studied).
@RyanFlannigan00 doesn’t do it, while I do. I don’t want to deviate from my routine, while @RyanFlannigan00 wants to prevent any induced hand tremor.

2. I’m curious what others think? @ranjithramamd @PremalPatelMD @drhelenbernie @aherati @glukemachen @AshleyGWinter @DGlaucomflecken
3. Looking into the literature surgeons (all fields) seem to be the largest consumers of coffee.
Interestingly male staff drink more coffee (specifically espresso) compared to female counterparts. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26676463/

4. Is caffeine even associated with tremor?
Probably.
In one study 2% of controls noted that coffee makes their hand shaky https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3796831/

5. Dose seems to be important as 3mg/kg increased whole arm physiologic tremor in young men while 1mg/kg did not.
Unfortunately my coffee machine does not allow me to dose based on weight… https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9493502/

6. Looking at the bigger picture @GovCanHealth says a healthy adult can consume 400mg/kg with no adverse events, and this has been backed up in systematic reviews. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30340340/
7. What does this mean for @RyanFlannigan00 and I’s debate?
Well if I want to stay under the 1mg/kg to keep my hands steady at the microscope I can have a 2oz shot of @PalletCoffee espresso (in Van) or @LittleVicCoffee (when in Ottawa) as these should contain ~80mg of caffeine.

8. Maybe our patients should have a coffee (at appropriate fasting times) as evidence suggests it accelerates recovery from anesthesia. Although would our anesthesia colleagues agree?
