2023: ELECTORAL REFORMS, A PANACEA FOR PEACE

I will try to make this article as simple as possible for us to have a lay man understanding of the benefit of electoral reforms. One of the most remarkable lessons from the 2019 general elections is the need for electoral reforms
in Nigeria. The election was short of anything free and fair. In many quarters, it is believed that the opposition candidate, Atiku Abubakar won the elections.

Fast forward to the governorship elections in Kogi State, we saw videos of armed men attacking polling units
carting away ballot boxes. We read of people being killed across the states. All these can be prevented if Nigeria decides to reform it's electoral laws.

The call for electoral reforms are not new to the country.
The 8th National Assembly passed the bill but the President refused to sign it citing a few errors.

For how long, will Nigerians continue to die because of elections. For how long will ballot box snatching and electoral violence continue to ravage the country.
The time for electoral reforms is now.

The diaspora who remits over 25b US dollars yearly back to the country deserves a right to vote. The importance of electronic voting cannot be over emphasized as this will help reduce electoral malpractices.
In order to forestall a repeat of 2019, electoral reforms must be passed if we are to make any progress on our electoral process. Electronic voting must be introduced along side diaspora voting. We cannot continue this barbaric way of manual voting that has continued to
lead to infringement of people's right and choices in the country.
As we prepare for the next general elections in the country, it is important that the electoral laws are reformed to prevent electoral malpractices and for Nigerians to once again believe in
our electoral processes. We cannot continue to register voters electronically while voting manually.

The call by the 9th National Assembly to pass the electoral reform bill is a welcome development but must be hasten to avoid a repeat of the 2019 scenario.
Our elections cannot continue to be a joke. The only way to achieve peace in 2023 is to allow Nigerians choose there leaders without interference, rigging and other forms of electoral malpractices.
