Some thoughts on last week's @INSneuro virtual meeting. TL;DR - social justice was centered & given the due place it deserves; SIGs are on 🔥(join one or start one); virtual conferences✅& in fact can reach more people; & we need to make the recorded materials more accessible!
Big thanks and kudos to @AmygdalaPhD, #MollyZimmerman, @MarcNorman18 , #MargaretO'Connor for organizing. Society conferences are significant service commitments & we all could see how much planning/thought went into it.
Special Interest Groups – championed by #INS Science Committee have been doing a tremendous job. You could see their impact from symposia to social lounges to advocating for free trial student membership. Looking forward to writing up on their work for the INS newsletter!
Although I missed hanging out with our panelists for our “Beyond Brain-Behavior Correlations” symposium, the happy hour was great fun, and connected people who would not even be there at INS. This is the #1 advantage of opening up our sessions.
INS organized a task force to address systemic racism in neuropsychology. Led by Tony Stringer at Emory, we had our first conversation on microaggressions, & it was everything. Long road to go, but this was an important start. Looking forward to seeing what comes of it!
The conference centered decolonozing neuropsychology in various ways throughout the meeting. In the last ~15 years or so I have attended this meeting on/off, I did not think this would happen. In doing so, they also centered inclusivity in ways unimaginable.
Lots & lots of talks to watch, posters to visit, & all of that is available for the next 3 months. I do hope that conference organizers make this available to our broader community. See my suggestions below on this.
If time is limited, highly recommend watching @ManlyEpic plenary on a social justice call to neuropsychology. Drop everything & do it - I promise you will cherish every minute of it. I plan on watching it with my lab, and include the entire team from undergrads to post-docs.
The meeting ended with a late Friday night rendezvous with @ManlyEpic organized by @DrCooper, @ezgammada – it was inspiring to hear from students, it was heartening to hear from @CeriseElliott at #NIA, & see fellow faculty wanting to learn more about what we can do.
As a faculty member, I know I would like to do more to identify barriers students are experiencing , but at times unsure of what are the best actions to take. So we formed a listserv of faculty/students who are wanting to collaborate on addressing these issues in neuropsychology.
We are calling it the Manly coalition – If you want to be part of it, DM me!
Here are two suggestions to @INSneuro : a) please make the materials recorded as part of the conference publicly available – so many can benefit so much. I would love for my broader lab to be able to see so many of these videos, esp. those on decolonizing neuropsychology.
b. Conference registration can be cost prohibitive for students/trainees. What if those of us getting honoraria from conferences to give talks etc. gave it back to the organization to start a conference registration fund for students? Not all can do, but at least some can!
That's a wrap for me! See you all in New Orleans!
