So I’ve been noticing this trend in my queries where ppl try to (marginalize?) bait me. Stories are presented as ownvoices and include a BIPOC or disabled MC, but later the bio hints the author only has tangential experience here. It feels strategic and intentional.
There are so many larger discussions being had right now about literary black and brown face, but I’m truly seeing how some people attempt to reach out to me, an agent of color, as if we share a community and I have a responsibility to to rep them, only to be totally deceived.
Diverse storytelling isn’t a phenomenon to jump in on bc you just want to be published. When I ask for these stories, it’s not EXLUDING you, it’s finally INCLUDING the people who haven’t had access and a space yet. So don’t try to trick your way in.
