I’m truly baffled that in the year 2021 an institution like the Paris Opera had to commission a report to tell them the very shit they knew they have been engaging in.
If there’s one company that got a heads up that their entire system was fucked, it was them. https://twitter.com/lauracappelle/status/1358702794421764098
In 2015, when Benjamin Millepied was staging Nureyev’s Bayadere, he had to fight both the dancers and the board to remove blackface from the production.
And y’all didn’t even let him live it down so he had to leave. You knew your system was not okay.
Like, I really don’t understand what companies are on about and it pisses me off. These are the same institutions that turn on us and say that change in ballet takes time... Well, maybe if you had commissioned the report in 2015 when this shit was pointed out to you it wouldn’t.
But no. They waited for more bullshit to pile on, they waited for a lot of people to show outrage and for a worldwide movement to demand better.
Of course it’s gonna take time with y’all making clowns of yourselves pretending you didn’t know these were problems.
And what gets to me is the report is asking them for the bare minimum.
A no blackface/yellow face rule? You should’ve had this! If not for a long time, at the very least since 2015!
To go and find diverse talent instead of waiting for them to come to you? No shit!
I’m not naive, I know ballet is rooted very deeply in white supremacy and that unraveling that takes time and effort and advocacy.
But some days it’s really disheartening to be out here screaming about these things while companies cover their ears and pretend they don’t hear it.
Nobody points these things out because we hate ballet. We LOVE ballet and that’s why we know it could be better, why we know it requires a profound level of inclusion. Everyone should be able to enjoy and be welcome in ballet. Not just rich white people.
