A few things I wanted to address about Children of Chicago coming out tomorrow -
1. It's about about villains and bad people doing bad things. Just because I write about bad people, that doesn't mean I condone what they do. It means I acknowledge they exist.

2. I never say in the book Chicago is an awful place. I literally live right here.
3. I never say a better place is the suburbs.
4. The main character is not supposed to be liked, just like the main character in American psycho is not supposed to be liked...

5. I'm a horror writer. If you don't like the characters, that's probably the point. I'm not going to write about puppies and rainbows. I'm going to write about things that make us uncomfortable and see the horror that we live with.
I don't believe that horror should be safe or cute. That's not what I write, and if that's what you thought I wrote, about sweeping moors, and odd girls living at the edge of town, then I'm sorry. I write about bad people.
I write horror.
I write horror.
And if you don't like any of these themes then don't buy my books.
When is a good time to write about a bad cop? Apparently never.
It's a bad cop. Bad cops exist. I've seen bad cops. I've been slammed up against police cars by bad cops and they don't lose their job when they do bad things and it's happened in Chicago. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/feb/24/chicago-police-detain-americans-black-site

Adding this next comment because it's important - read it. Memorize it. Unfollow if you don't like it...
There's also this growing expectation that writers of color should be social justice warriors-perhaps in the vein of Jordan Peele. That's not our responsibility to write about social issues & bring them to a place of comfy resolution. My job as a horror writer is to write horror
It's NOT my responsibility to give you resolution. There's no resolution in life. Life ends. You die. There are loose strings left dangling in the wind. My job is not to make you feel good about this hell we call life. The world is bad. Take a look our your window.
