2/8 A general recommendation will be to use Compound C as basal dressing - 600Kgs/ha, ALL to be applied at transplanting. The price is $30/bag so 12 bags * 30 = $360. Fertilizer rate given here is a GENERALIZED. Specific fertilizer rates will come from a soil test @BusisaMoyo
3/8 Top dress with Ammonium nitrate - about 100Kgs/ha. Split apply between 18 - 35 days after transplanting. The price of AN is $31/bag * 2 bags = $62. You may need Muriate of Potash which should generally be applied between 6 - 8 weeks after transplanting @CdeNMaswerasei
4/8 For pre-emergent herbicides - Look for Goal/Galigan/Oxyfluofern. For post-emergent herbicides, use either Gallant super, 1 - 2Lt/ha or Agil, 0.5 - 2Lt/ha or Fusilade forte. Prices for Gallant super & Agil are $10 & 22/Liter respectively @MoLAFWRR_Zim @AgritexS @WendyMadzura
5/8 A robust fungicide regime is needed to curb common diseases eg. Alternaria, Powdery mildew, Purple blotch. Your basket must have Orius, about 1Lt, Dithane, about 6Kgs, Metalaxyl + Mancozeb, about 4Kgs. PRICES are $4/200mls, $8/Kg, $1.50/200 grams respectively @agribusinesszw
6/8 In terms of insecticides - you need Carbaryl 85 - to control Caterpillars & you need Malathion 25 to control Leaf hoppers, you need about 1kg of each. Prices are $14/Kg & $4/500grams respectively @agribusiness110 @Fifi_dvc @mmawere @SandraNabasirye @terrymap1 @PhiriDivah
7/8 OBVIOUSLY we can’t talk about ONION pests & not mention THRIPS as they are the most economically important pest. You need at least two products & options are Thunder, Malathion 25 OR 50 & Cartap. Thunder & Cartap are are going for $5/100mls & $14/Kg respctively @akin_adesina
8/8 Other critical factors that affect productivity MUST be considered such as Tillage, Irrigation, Soil analysis, Choice of variety (SEED), Time of planting, Storage, Curing, Transport to the MARKET, Good Agronomic Practices @terrymap1 @WendyMadzura @mucharedzeyi @MM_Garden1
