Sold as a tool for reducing collisions and keeping drivers & customers safe, Amazon is introducing AI-enhanced cameras to its delivery fleet. 4 cameras (road facing, side facing & driver facing), always on 📸

But what's a potential downside?

The experience of being constantly watched, but largely unnoticed (by managers) leads those being watched to interpret the surveillance as coercive control. These employees are more likely to engage in "invisibility practices", to try and go unseen / remain unnoticed.

2/4
Management, in turn, interprets these invisibility practices as resistance, which justifies for more surveillance, which encourages workers to engage in further invisibility practices. A self-fulfilling, self-enforcing cycle (of interpretation and action) is created🌪️

This cycle is already well underway. Amazon drivers were already being tracked using an app which recorded braking, swerving, seat belt use, etc. The introduction of cameras suggests a desire for more surveillance, and any perceived resistance likely to lead to more control.
