In the early days of the Greenwich Lesbian and Gay Rights Group, press coverage of AIDS was extremely homophobic, driving public stigma and scare-mongering. #LGBTHM21
In 1985 the GLGRG set up an AIDS Consciousness-Raising Group, which met regularly to learn about the growing crisis and what they could do to support the community. #LGBTHM21
The GLGRG organised a public AIDS meeting in June 1985 at the Clockhouse Community Centre in Woolwich. Chaired by David Simpson, with speakers including a representative from @THTorguk, a doctor, and someone discussing women with HIV-AIDS, called ‘blood sisters’. #LGBTHM21
The GLGRG’s David Simpson was also the convenor of NALGO’s Lesbian and Gay Group, which held a conference in 1985 to consider ‘AIDS as a Trade Union Issue’ and discussed the ways in which councils might support lesbian and gay staff. #LGBTHM21
Stigma and homophobia around AIDS affected #LGBTQ+ individuals and services nationwide. When GLGRG moved offices in 1985, false rumours spread that the Greenwich Volunteer Bureau had forced them to leave through “AIDS panic”. The Bureau issued this rebuttal. #LGBTHM21
In 1986 the GLGC newsletter reported on the amazing work being done at the new London Lighthouse to establish a hospice and day centre for those affected by #HIV and AIDS and to provide a refuge for those marginalised because of their diagnosis. #LGBTHM21
