Today is Kooshab Day celebrated by all ranks of The Poona Horse. On this day in 1857 the regiment at Khooshab in Persia, had charged an infantry square manned by the elite Persian 1st Khusgai Regiment of Fars and completely destroyed it.
Two officers of the regiment were awarded VC and a number of personnel were awarded IOM. Most importantly The Poona Horse captured the standard of Khusgai Regiment and on it was surmounted a silver Hand with a Persian engraving stating ' Hand of God is above all things'.
Kooshab was a tough battle. The infantry square supported by arty guns was considered impenetrable by cavalry. The Poona Horse charged and destroyed it. The Silver Hand that was captured now surmounts The Poona Horse Standard.
On it is inscribed in Persian 'Hans of God is above all things'. As late Gen Hanut Singhji, MVC, would say ' It is The Hand of God in Abhayam Mudra , granting the Blessing of Abhay. Have no fear I am with you.'
Blessed with Abhay The Poona Horse continues its culture of excellence with its personnel being awarded 4VCs and 2 PVCs amongst other awards. The regt holds the maximum number of battle honours as won by a single unit.
