Wrestling with this thoughtful thread. The only thing I’d add is that Taiwanese do not just experience aggression from Chinese officials but often from ordinary Han Chinese. The insults Taiwanese vs. Chinese express towards one another do not have the same real-world impact. Both are wrong morally. But one enacts a policy & ideology that credibly threatens the other w/annihilation. The other is undertaken from a position of geopolitical powerlessness
They are also misguided strategically. Such insults belie the brotherly love many Chinese profess to feel for Taiwanese. On the flip side, being stereotyped is likely to make Chinese people feel less open to the case for a free Taiwan, the opposite of what is needed for progress.
