To be honest, I can't say that I'm a fan of that costume design. But superpower? Maybe a combination of Han and Nunchi? https://twitter.com/USEmbassySeoul/status/1358651311126839298
The more I think about it, I don't even like the character's name. Taegukgi? That's the name of the SKorean flag. Imagine if Captain America wasn't wearing a costume based on the American flag but was actually wearing the flag and his name was "Star Spangled Banner." Ridiculous!
Back in the day, there was a Japanese character in Marvel Comics. I think he's mostly forgotten now, but his name was Sunfire. And he had a really cool costume, too. Look at that gorgeous costume. The only hint that it's Japanese is the samurai shoulder armor. But it's enough.
He wasn't wearing an entirely white suit with a red circle on his chest, and his name wasn't Hinomaru because that would have been dumb. It would have been too much. What would his power have been? Whale hunting?
No, he was called Sunfire, and his superpower was the ability to generate superheated plasma and flight. He just happened to be Japanese. His entire persona wasn't about being Japanese.
But Taegukgi? Just from his costume and name, everything about him has got to be an amalgamation of every cliched Korean characteristic. It's lazy as hell, and the more I think about it, the more it pisses me off. As a Korean, thanks, but no thanks.
I can't believe that I'm still mad about this, but here I am.
