This is going to be a largely statistical thread on electoral history of Maharashtra since the State's formation in 1960

For most of it's existence Maharashtra has been ruled by the Indian National Congress

Chavan was replaced by Marotrao Kannamwar, who served as CM until his death in November 1963

In July 1978, Sharad Pawar rebelled against Patil, breaking INC(U) by taking 38 of its MLAs with him, and joined hands with Janata Party to create the United Front government, hence toppling the Patil government and becoming the CM via a coup
Pawar remained as CM till February 1980, when his government was among the opposition ones dismissed by Indira Gandhi after coming back to power at the Centre

INC(I) stormed back to power with 186 seats and 44.50% votes

Abdul Rehman Antulay was made the CM, who was replaced by Babasaheb Bhosale in January 1982, who was replaced by Vasantdada Patil in February 1983, who served rest of the term till 1985
Hence the term saw multiple CMs in lieu with rotation policy of Congress

For the 1985 elections, the Indian Socialist Congress (ICS),(rechristened form of INC(U)) under Sharad Pawar formed an alliance with Janata Party, BJP and PWP against the Congress
INC retained power with 161 seats and 43.41% votes

Pawar was sworn in as CM again, serving till June 1991 when he went to Delhi after Rajiv Gandhi's death

The 1995 elections saw Congress finally being displaced from power in the State after 15 years and the coalition government of Shiv Sena and BJP coming to power

Infighting within Congress meant that as many as 45 independents were elected

This election saw the emergence of the Maharshtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) which won 13 seats and 5.71% votes

In 2014 the country saw a big political change with the rejuvenation of BJP under Narendra Modi, coming through big discontent against UPA government

BJP became more dominating in the Maharashtra alliance as well , which irked the Shiv Sena leading to the alliance breaking before the 2014 election
