How @springsteen and @Jeep created a #SuperBowl advertisement that exalts & perpetuates white christian nationalism. And maybe more later on how this horrific use of religious and patriotic iconography perpetuates white supremacy

A thread, with verbal/visual translations by me. https://twitter.com/springsteen/status/1358606430383689728
“There’s a chapel in Kansas, standing on the exact center of the lower 48. It never closes.”

Translation:
The sun shines on this Christian chapel. The Center is preferable. The center is Christian. The Christian Center is our goal.
“All are more than welcome to come meet here in the middle”

Translation:
Most are not welcome here. Only those who worship America (and white Jesus) meet in this place. There is nothing inclusive or welcoming to anyone who's not a white Christian about this message or visual.
“It’s no secret, the middle has been a hard place to get to lately… between red and blue, between servant and citizen, between our freedom and our fear.”

Translation:
Why can't more of you be White Christian Nationalists? Also, all choices are binary...
... So we must come together have some bit of red and some bit of blue, some acts of serving and others of citizenry... apparently, there is also a preferred center between freedom and FEAR!!!

wtf... freedom needs to move towards fear so we can hit that sweet center?!?
"Now, fear has never been the best of who we are, and as for freedom, it’s not the property of just the fortunate few – it belongs to us all."

Translation:
General evangelical and patriotic platitudes. Freedom belongs to "us all" (the White Christian Nationalists)
“Whoever you are, wherever you’re from. It’s what connects us, and we need that connection. We need the middle”

Translation:
Again, Christianity is the middle. Whoever you are, wherever you're from, if you're not Christian, then you're not connected - and if you're not connected
... then you're the problem. The center is the preferred moral high ground that me must all move towards - so yes, you must compromise with nazis.
"We just have to remember, the very soil we stand on is common ground.”

Translation:
Please don't remember that we took this land from Indigenous people and killed them. It's ours now... ours being White Christian Nationalists.
“So, we can get there… We can make it to the mountaintop, through the desert, and we will cross this divide.”

Translation:
Onward Christian Soldiers. White supremacy will prevail.
“Our light has always found its way through the darkness and there’s hope on the road up ahead.”

Translation:
We (white christian nationalists) are a source of light. We worship ourselves. Look at how pure and holy this cowboy church cross sunrise video nonsense is.
This horrific conflation of Christianity and American Exceptionalism is White Supremacy 101 and everyone involved in this advert needs to repent.
And for what it's worth, "the middle" is not automatically a place of justice, nor is it a place of equity. The Jesus I read about sides with the poor, the oppressed, the marginalized, & the suffering. My God moves all the way to where they are and then gives them everything....
The worst responses to this thread are from those who refuse to acknowledge that White Sumpremacist Christian Nationalism is not confined to a single political party, & that Christianity (mixed with shallow patriotism) is being perverted to both insight issurections & sell cars.
