Dear fellow Canucks. 🇨🇦 The 2021 Census is coming up in May. @StatCan_eng has announced a further consultation by e-mail, and here's a 🧵 on why I think Canadians 🇨🇦 need to have a talk with @StatCan_eng about our Census. https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2021/consultation/index-eng.cfm
Here's the long form census. Note that @StatCan_eng wants to know what our "sex assigned at birth" is. Male or female are the choices. Then they want to know what our 'gender' is: Male, Female, or "Specify". Male & female are genders as well as sexes. 🤔 https://www.statcan.gc.ca/eng/statistical-programs/instrument/3901_Q2_V6
Let's start our investigation here, with this "Sex at birth and gender: Technical Report": https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2021/ref/98-20-0002/982000022020002-eng.cfm
Here is where our government calls unsuspecting Canadians "cisgender":
The thing is, @StatCan_eng doesn't ask Canadians in the Census if we're 'cisgender', or even if we know what it is.
How does it know? It "imputes" Canadians' gender. @StatCan_eng is assigning Canadians 'cisgender'. From the Technical Report:
Let's just stop and admire @StatCan_eng 's imputation to paper-form-filling-out Canadians the qualities of unreliability and must be interpreted with caution because being over 70 they've likely forgotten what sex is and gender is a new idea. 🧓🇨🇦
This is a @Womans_Place_UK webinar on sex in the Census which took place in October. It is UK but everything discussed here applies to Canada. It's a great intro to why the sex question is so important in our Census.
