And yes, there were many parts of the stimulus that were terrible. Absolutely. But criticising them for deficit spending during a pandemic is cynical at best, and perpetuates the myth that deficit spending = bad.
What we should be doing instead is holding them to this standard consistently. The government should spend money on social programs. There should be no poverty. We should raise Newstart and parenting payments. We should abolish all forms of managed income.
And when the economy is booming, rather than tax cuts for the wealthy, we should THEN be putting money aside for future emergencies.
