The NSSE is a designation for events (Super Bowl, Inauguration, Olympics, etc) that are deemed so large that they pose a risk for an act of terror.
So Dept of Homeland Security (including ICE, CBP, CIA, NSA) + local police
and collab on how to surveil + lock down your city. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/super-bowl-security-2021-tampa/

Despite the smaller scale of this yearâs Super Bowl, ICE is currently mobilizing in Tampa to terrorize and deport undocumented residents. https://twitter.com/ICEgov/status/1358059960094121986
While many believe this security theater is necessary to prevent âterrorismâ and acts of mass violence, by ICEâs own admission their presence is to protect the NFLâs profit by scaring off street vendors selling food and unlicensed merchandise https://twitter.com/ICEgov/status/1357773822410321926
Los Angeles based feds are already brainstorming the gameplan for Super Bowl 2022 - which theyâll use as a dry run for the much larger LA28 games. https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2021-02-06/this-secret-service-agent-is-in-tampa-planning-for-las-super-bowl-next-year
The NSSE was signed into law in 2000. Then 9/11 opened the door for the PATRIOT Act and an era of trampled civil liberties.
The NSSE was first deployed for sports purposes in the 2002 Super Bowl and, in the same week, the Salt Lake City Winter games.

The NSA used the 2002 games as a pretext for warrantless surveillance over the area. During those games, wide swaths of data of people in Salt Lake City area were stolen by the NSA.
Former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson eventually sued the federal government, âalleging that in the wake of Sept. 11 terror attacks, U.S. intelligence agencies conducted widespread illegal surveillance on Utahns and visitors during the 2002 Games.â
There are other galling examples of what the surveillance state is doing under the guise of national security and sports entertainment.
Two Super Bowls ago in Atlanta, the law enforcement agency tweeted this: https://twitter.com/ICEgov/status/1092133562512490496

One of the biggest headlines to come out of that Super Bowl was 21 Savage being detained in Atlanta the day of the event by ICE, who was there for the game. The rapper said he was âdefinitely targeted" by agents.
âThey didnât say nothing. They just said, âWe got Savage.ââ

In LA, not only do we have three NSSEs on the horizon (Super Bowl LVI in 2022, World Cup in 2026, LA28), but we are also home to huge populations that will be the victims of this increased presence. Any NSSEs will be a problem for our communities made up of marginalized groups.
The LA-based NSSEs will also hurt immigrant families; 400K documented + undocumented people form a population larger than most American cities.
They will also further harm 60,000+ unhoused residents, who will be put at a heightened risk of incarceration, deportation, and death.

Every NSSE ALSO comes with an intensification of local law enforcement. When the event is over, much of the hyper-militarized equipment and surveillance tech stays and has to be maintained and paid for by our local government.
Currently, NSSEs are paid for through federal taxes. Each one costs anywhere from $3-5B.
To put it into perspective, it is estimated that $20B is needed to eradicate homelessness in America.
Instead of spending on 4-5 NSSEs, we could have ended homelessness in the last decade.

The NSSE will give more power to federal and local law enforcement agencies to surveill, sweep, and incarcerate. They also undo the work of organizers who are working towards real protections for immigrants and unhoused residents.
