Trump control of ICE has come 'n gone & Maryland still hasn't passed key bills to protect immigrants. I've made a list of reforms my colleagues are pushing to stop local resources from going to federal family separation - no matter who's in the White House
#MDGA21 #MDpolitics

1) Phase Out ICE Detention Facilities (HB 16 & SB 478) - The "Dignity Not Detention Act" would end the practice of Maryland counties getting paid to jail immigrants for ICE (see #HoCoMD #HoCo). This bill is sponsored by @DelegateStewart & @Willcsmithjr https://www.baltimoresun.com/maryland/howard/cng-ho-ice-protest-20200623-ojvhwnr73veyhexmnauxwr6r3e-story.html
2) Restrict ICE Access To MVA Data (HB 23 & SB 234) - After learning ICE taps into MD's drivers license database, @DelDanaMStein1 & @ClarenceLamMD want a search warrant. This would protect our decision that it's safer to register undocumented drivers. https://www.baltimoresun.com/politics/bs-md-pol-ice-mva-bill-20200227-rsgqqajmwne4hollsz4svgpa6m-story.html
3) Stop Separating Families Over Minor Offenses (HB 354 & SB 527) - @WanikaFisher & @SenatorSusanLee are trying to stop families from being broken up over petty offenses. Other states (VA ahem!) have ensured PBJ's don't accidentally lead to deportation. https://www.baltimoresun.com/opinion/op-ed/bs-ed-op-0207-pbj-deportation-20210205-4td5rmdayraobpp4fejuvdxfo4-story.html
4) Stop MD Police from Becoming Deportation Agents (HB 304 & SB 88) - It's been a top priority for immigrant advocates to ban our police from being conscripted into federal civil immigration enforcement. Meanwhile unconstitutional policing in #FrederickMD: https://www.npr.org/local/305/2021/01/22/959403384/a-c-l-u-settles-lawsuit-against-frederick-county-s-sheriff-over-immigration-enforcement
5) Provide Legal Representation in MD Deportation Cases (HB 750 & SB 317) - As we know from eviction cases, having an attorney is key. Same for deportation, so @VAtterbeary & @shellyhettleman are trying to create a right to counsel in these cases. See eg: https://www.npr.org/local/305/2021/01/29/962038006/maryland-considers-guaranteeing-a-lawyer-to-low-income-renters-facing-eviction
