A few tweets about a (very) small personal connection to this year’s Super Bowl but really they’re more about the value of determination and the potential rewards of doggedly pursuing a passion. 1/5
My oldest son Rob attended @SienaCollege and played @SienaLacrosse Siena had a very strong team in his first year (2011), winning the @MAACSports conference and earning a trip to the NCAA tourney. A big part of that success was because of face off specialist @zach_triner 2/5
Triner, also a freshman, was powerful, relentless and certainly won more face offs than he lost. At the end of that season though he decided his heart was actually in football so he departed Siena for Assumption University where one his roles was as the team’s long snapper. 3/5
After Assumption, Triner spent years bouncing from NFL camp to NFL camp while holding a job selling mutual funds. Instead of giving up, he continued to hone his very specific craft. Finally, that perseverance paid off and he made Tampa Bay last season as a 28-year-old rookie. 4/5
So if you notice number 97 on the Bucs tonight, know this. He understands better than most, how long and winding the road can be to finally fulfill a dream. 5/5
