One thing I’ve noticed a lot of people saying about @derek_del’s IN & OF ITSELF is “it’s not/so much more than/better than a magic show.”
I think they mean it’s far more moving and complex than what we usually think of as a Magic Show. But...

...part of me also hears a kind of dismissiveness about magic too. Like when people refer to “elevated horror,” or “speculative fiction” instead of “sci-Fi.” And it bugs me.
The thing that always fascinates me about magic is, it’s an art form that only works by hiding itself.

You don’t have to know the first thing about how card handling is done to understand it takes decades to become good enough that almost no one knows how good you are.
The closest comparison, to me, is acting. Done right, all you see is what seems real. That takes a lifetime.

What DelGaudio does with his show is one of the best things I’ve ever ever seen, because it left me with feelings & thoughts far beyond most other magic shows. But also beyond most plays, movies, or music. It’s an achievement at the top of the craft.
But when he said “It takes 8 years to learn how to hold a deck of cards” it moved me as much as almost anything else.
Imagine working for 8 years to do something no one else will ever notice.
That’s what I think when I see almost any good magic show. And I’d never dismiss it.
