*** Covid Thread

As some of you know, my FIL, B, has Covid and is in the ICU fighting for his life. We got to speak to a Covid ICU nurse today to ask some questions and just see where he is in his fight. We learned a LOT about Covid and a lot that people just don't know 1/x
First, B is doing well for a Covid patient. The ups and downs are normal and while they can't guarantee what will happen, he is doing well compared to other people that have this horrific disease. He is going to be sedated for a while, but he isn't on 100% O2, which is 2/x
A great thing. He is fighting with every thing he has and while we thought that the ventilator was a last-resort, there are still options, so while he is by no means out of the woods, he is doing relatively well. We still appreciate all of the kind words and thoughts that 3/x
you have sent. It has helped me process and really makes it a bit better knowing that people care, it's not just us, but everyone is fighting alongside B and pulling for him.

Which brings me to the point. What I learned about Covid today chilled me to the bone. It is way 4/x
worse than I had imagined, even with the stories in the news. The deniers always yammer on about people having heart attacks and strokes and then being classified as a Covid death.

What I learned today was that it is because Covid is NOT like the flu, attacking the lungs. 5/x
What it actually attacks is the pulmonary system - arteries, veins, blood and the heart. It affects the lungs because they are so closely related to these systems. The breakdown of the pulmonary system leads to a whole host of issues, all of which can kill you.

And Covid 6/x
does permanent damage to these systems.

The reason it kills people with underlying issues is because their bodies are already damaged (even if only slightly) and don't have the capacity to fight back against it. It is a vicious, predatory, damaging disease.

Kids are 7/x
healthy and strong and able to fight it off. Same with healthy adults. Some better than others, which is why it seems to primarily prey on the older and weaker.

The main thing that I learned is that I don't want to come anywhere near getting it. There are no guarantees 8/x
that your body will be able to fight, no matter how strong you think your body is.

I am begging you, wear your mask, wash your hands, stay at home. I know more now than I did before, and I wish I was still ignorant. Just know that it is horrific and doesn't give a shit how 9/x
many people are in your corner or how strong you are. It will leave lasting effects on you. OR, you will give it to someone and it will have a lasting effect on them.

Either way, this is preventable. And too many people are not taking it seriously enough. It is NOT the Flu 10/x
It is much, much worse. Please take the precautions seriously. If it saves one person it is worth it. Please spare the families of the person that you could potentially infect.

It is so much worse than you think and we are one of the lucky ones.
