A conversation that might be worth having:

1) what kit are people using in this weather?

2) how long does it keep you OK, if uncomfortable?

3) how did you get it and how did that affect cost?

I'll go first (thread) https://twitter.com/drdagly/status/1358502423065550848
First, as a former farm kid, I know insulated coveralls are the way to go, and they are markedly less expensive than a lot of outdoor winter gear ( https://twitter.com/drdagly/status/1358468555331706880)
But, I'll also be the first to admit that, with few exceptions (including skiing at Castle, say), many winter outdoor activities are a bit awkward in insulate coveralls. And, I could rarely find a pair that fit well.

ANYWAY, onto the questions
1) What kit do I use?

Wool base layer, top and bottom
Running tights
Wool socks
Soft shell
Insulated smock
gloves
2 neck warmers
2 toques
It was -23 (real feel = -32, whatever that means). Minimal wind

In this kit at that temperature, I'm pretty good for 20 minutes at a slow jog. By 30 minutes, some parts, especially the skin on my thighs, is numb.
3) How did I get most of this kit and what did it cost?

I bought the wool base layers (top and bottom) retail (~$200) total. Running tights from @oiselle (~96 USD). Third bottom layer? Down skirt that was a gift.
On top, the soft shell was also a gift, and the insulated smock -- honestly, without this piece, I would not be able to be outside much past -10 -- is my spouse's. Because it's a men's coat, it also has pockets big enough for a grocery bag
Added benefit of said smock = b/c men's, it's long enough I can go out in light gloves b/c the sleeves extend well past my hands.

I bought one neck warmer but was gifted the other. Same with the toques.
The main reason why I could go outside to play/run/whatever today is b/c I live in a context where I can either afford the gear OR I can reasonably ask for it for gifts from others who can afford it.

It seems like a major error, at least to me, to assume this is most people
Most folks might have access to winter gear that is good enough to -10 or so. But this cold? This cold is a whole other level of gear and it costs. Dearly.
If this was just on me, even now, I probably would never spend what it takes to get this kit retail b/c it would be an extravagance in my budget
If we are serious about examining how things like wealth inequality affect health, and how recreation affects mental health, then how much kit costs should be front loaded in the conversation.

And I run. It's "supposed" to be cheap. At -30, it isn't.
