The oldest available Luganda dictionaries confirm this. The images in 1/4 are from C.T. Wilson, An Outline Grammar of the Luganda Language (London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, 1882), whose terms were provided by intellectuals in the royal court. 2/4
Ganda intellectuals in 1890s Mengo saw 'need' as best translated as 'kwagalla', not bwetaavu, etaaga, edaaga, etc. By the early 1920s, W.A. Crabtree, A Manual of Lu-Ganda (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1921) suggested that 'need' & 'love' were defined differently. 3/4
