Shadow work entails becoming aware of the things that you do not like about yourself and taking ownership of them, instead of repressing them. It requires being honest with your full, complex self.

Here’s a story that I can use to explain what I mean. https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2021-02-05/trumpite-neighbor-unity-capitol-attack
Note that the author seems to despise Trump supporters due to a kind of behavior she says they exhibit while not realizing that she too exhibits that behavior.
She can perceive that other groups are trapped in an us-vs-them paradigm but can’t see that she is too, when it comes to trump supporters.
Instead of doing shadow work, what we do, as human beings, is project our own shadows onto others. And all of this creates a vicious cycle. And we end up being stuck in the us-vs-them paradigm.
We have to get rid of our obsession with perfection. If something is imperfect, it is also redeemable.
