If I can make this clearer in a new thread: slavery was not seen as immoral until folks worked to construct the practice as not being compassionate. They were able to produce this moral consensus...

...through a combination of changes in the economy making slavery less economically viable and their force of will (or force of arms).

So it may be that we have universal drives for compassion as @StrangelEdweird, @CathrynTownsend, and @philosophus90 point out.

It helped me refine my thoughts, and ironically gives me some justification for my social justice advocacy. We can't simply do nothing and expect the world to be compassionate or moral in the way we want.
