I know white writers write poc main characters because they want poc readers to see themselves in books, but here’s what happens when you do that: publishers end up acquiring books written by white people instead of books by pocs because they find the former easier to relate to.
And most of the ppl in publishing houses making these decisions are white. So poc readers don’t actually get represented. And the books they would actually have related to don’t get bought.
Needless to say guys, you can and should write whatever you like. It’s not for me or anyone else to dictate what you choose to write about. I’m just pointing out what happens in publishing.
I’m sorry guys I’m going to mute this. It got an anxiety-inducing amount of attention. I reiterate again, far be it for me to dictate what anyone writes. Just pointing this out for the Writers who may not have realised it.
