I don't like to go on about this - I think book bloggers do it more eloquently than I can! - but if you love seeing books by queer and/or POC authors, please consider preordering them. The more sales, the more invested publishing becomes in investing in diverse work.
Preordering can feel a bit like - why? - but ordering a book before it's out signals there's excitement. It ups publisher investment, and gives editors more clout to acquire other QPOC books before that particular book even touches shelves.
Think of it this way: there's always going to be someone in the room where the money is saying, 'I just don't think [minority group] buy books. Our core audience is white and affluent.' There need to be cold, hard numbers to fight that. It's not pretty, but it is what it is.
That said, it's kind of eugh to drag yourself over with your credit card muttering, 'I'm doing this for diversity' lmao, so I encourage you to do it for the fun of surprise books you forgot you ordered, and to preorder the kind of books you know you love.
I'm also well aware many people can't pre-order, or can't afford to buy books, and there's no guilt or duty attached to this! But if you have the money and you want to spend it on q/poc books, this is a good way to do it.
