A Small Thread on Egwu Ekpili (Ekpiri):
This Igbo Music Style originated in Anambra and is one of the few music styles along with Egwu Ogene that survived to the modern era (20th century) before becoming now nearly extinct/extinct
This Igbo Music Style originated in Anambra and is one of the few music styles along with Egwu Ogene that survived to the modern era (20th century) before becoming now nearly extinct/extinct
This style was replaced with Igbo Highlife (which incorporates primarily non-Igbo musical instruments such as piano and guitar in combination with Igbo Traditional instruments) and todayâs Modern Igbo rap.
Egwu Ekpili incorporates the use of the âUboââ the Igbo thumb guitar (which we donât see as often) as well as the widely known âIchakaâ which is a guord/calabash covered loosely with beads or udala (eyolo) seeds «two different ichakas pictured»
Chief Akunwafor Ezigbo Obiligbo was one of the last masters of the Egwu Ekpili style and the Ubo. And he is considered the father of Igbo highlife. He left a large amount of his work on the gramophone record format. but many of his greatest works have been preserved.
One of his famous songs is âIgba Ndi Ezeâ which is in the Egwu Ekpili style.
Another Song by Chief Akunwafor Ezigbo Obiligbo is âIfe Enu Nemeâ. In this video you can see the Ubo, Ichaka, Udu, as well as another igbo traditional instrument being played harmoniously
Chief Akunwafor Ezigbo Obiligbo is the grandfather of Umu Obiligbo. Umu Obiligbo are modern day high life musicians that collaborate with the likes of other Igbo musicians such as Flavour, Phyno, Zoro etc. In this video they are singing one of their grandfathers songs
So thatâs the end of my thread, i just thought to share because @Zebra_Fever_ and I really appreciate this music style and we would love to see it sampled as much as Egwu Ogene in music today

this information came from the internet and our parents lol
