The Minister @DrZweliMkhize is engaging very comfortably with the science of Covid-19. He's showing a much deeper understanding of the nuances in his articulation. He's even brought together 'competing' scientific groups to the same table. Say what you will, but this is progress.
It's clear from the briefing tonight that most senior scientists present have vested interests in one vaccine or another, with potential for conflicts of interest in pushing the vaccine agenda. In the whole tug of war, subtle or overt, interests of South Africans must supersede.
I want to express my appreciation for the local scientific data on vaccines. It's really commendable that South African scientists generated local data on these vaccine trials, now able to inform local policy decisions on the most ideal combination of vaccines for South Africans.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine does offer superior protection based on the current results, protecting nearly 6 in 10 people from any Covid-19 disease, and 9 in 10 people from severe Covid-19 disease and death, with once off single dose and storage at normal fridge temperature.
Although the current Astra-Zeneca vaccine results are disappointing, let us not dismiss it. 1) It will protect 3 in 4 people against variants from the first wave. 2) May protect 1 in 4 people from the new variant in second wave. 3) Likely to protect all from severe disease.
Since the Astra-Zeneca vaccine is cheap and stored at normal fridge temperature, roll out in SA is worth serious consideration, especially among healthier adults in line with current evidence. There were no cases of severe disease or death in the trial. The vaccine is also safe.
Astra-Zeneca vaccine manufacturers should seriously consider a booster for the new variant, as should other manufacturers. If Astra-Zeneca confirmed they would release a booster at no extra cost, or very minimal, I would strongly support continued roll out among healthier adults.
Since there's consensus that in all probability the 3rd wave is coming around winter, and that allowing new infections to rise increases the chances of virus mutations, it will be wise for South Africa not to create conditions for another mutant virus. It's worth planning now...
