It’s a 🧵

#TalesOfDrRon
Tunde was the sales lead in his company. He worked for one of the top brewery companies in Nigeria.

His job involved a lot of traveling across the south south and south east states. He rarely spent time at home as he was always on the road.
His wife Mary took care of the kids. They had 2 children. She was self employed and ran a beauty parlor.

A few days ago, Mary had developed some funny and terrible abdominal pains with fever and had to be rushed to the hospital.

It turned out to be appendicitis
And she had to be operated upon. The doctor said she was going to spend about 4 days on admission so Tunde was left to cater for the kids.

He took leave from office to take care of the kids. He shuttled between hospital, school and home.

It was stressful.
He didn’t have any idea of how to prepare the baby food.

He prepared the baby cereal it the way he thought was best and gave the 9 month old. The other child was 5 and ate regular diet.

Soon the baby started purging. Initially it was once, then twice, and thrice a day
Then the baby also started vomiting.

He didn’t think it was anything serious. He even asked a neighbor who said it was normal that it was because the baby was TEETHING.

The purging worsened and he noticed that the boy was weak. He was not as strong as before.
‘You can give him abidec. It will help him very well’ his Neighbour said.

Tunde got the abidec and gave him. There was little improvement and then it got worse again.

He never told the wife that the little boy was sick so as not to scare her.
Dave entered into the sitting room and Tunde closed the door behind him.

He gasped as he saw Dave’s 9 months old son lying on the sofa.

The boy looked weak and very tired.

‘Oh boy. Wetin do your pikin? He is not looking good at all’ Dave said
‘It’s nothing serious jare. Them say na teething. I Dey give an abidec. I asked my neighbor and she said it will stop’ Tunde replied with a tone of confidence.

‘Let’s go to the hospital right now! This boy is dying!’ Dave screamed at him

‘What do you mean?’ Tunde asked
Dave carried the boy from the sofa and headed towards the door. This boy was not going to die under his very eyes.

This was the same way another friend of his had lost his daughter.

Tunde quickly followed him and they rushed to a hospital that was just 15mjns from the house.
‘How long has he been stooling and vomiting?’ The doctor asked

‘3 days’ Tunde answered.

‘And why didn’t you come earlier?’

‘I was told he was teething and abidec will help’

The doctor was silent and he didn’t know what to say.
If he didn’t get an IV access in this child as soon as possible, the boy may not likely make it.

‘What are you trying to do sir’ Tunde asked.

‘Your child needs to be rehydrated as he is severely dehydrated. That is the only solution right now! ‘
Tunde was shocked when the doctor told him that he needed to shave his head to look for a vein.

‘Ah. Doc! Is it that bad?’

‘I am afraid so’ the doctor replied.

Now panic had set in and Tunde began to have tremors.

‘Pls do whatever you need to do’ he said
The doctor was able to get access into a vein on the head of the baby.

He took blood sample for tests and commenced life giving fluids into the child.

The baby was also commenced on antibiotics and he later made a successful recovery after 5 days on admission.
They were discharged after one week in the hospital and Tunde learnt a lot from the doctors and the nurses who took time to educate him on how to take care of his child.

He thanked Dave profusely as he was the reason why his boy was still alive.
Dear reader, the child in this story had a close shave with death but for timely intervention.

A few lessons

If your child is stooling and vomiting, the first aid you should give is ORS, which is oral rehydration salt. This helps your baby to recover the electrolytes
lost through stooling.

Not every fever, vomiting and stooling is due to TEETHING.

If your child has any of the above symptoms, pls go to the hospital ASAP!
Dear daddies, we know you are busy but also take some time to learn how to prepare baby food.

You need to wash your hands thoroughly before you handle any baby food or prepare it.

Make sure the spoon, plates and bottles used for feeding are sterilized before use.
Finally your NEIGHBOR is not the best person to ask for medical advise.

ALWAYS ask a healthcare professional or your healthcare provider.

Most hospitals these days have a number you can call to speak to your doctor or else just go to the hospital !
