Tonight I found myself on the Clearing House website once again looking for universities that accepts first degrees graduates who have a 2:2 and no further educational achievements (MSc or PhD). And once again dreams to become a clinical psychologist gets thwarted.
Then I asked myself why do BAME students do not do as well compared to their white peers. Here are some of my experiences why I am not educationally minded even though I am Asian (considering all the stereotypes)
1. My parents never helped with h/w because they could not read or write in English. In fact I had to teach them as I learnt having arrived in this country aged 7.
I went to a LND school of classrooms filled with 30 kids or more a lot of whom came from very complex backgrounds (read disadvantaged for many of my peers) and after school was spent “dossing” around because my parents couldn’t afford after school clubs/ around to look after me.
I learnt to speak, read and write in English 7 years onwards so I was lagging behind my peers and the gap only increased further and further as I progress through education.
Now! I read this https://www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/news/Pages/Universities-acting-to-close-BAME-student-attainment-gap.aspx
And I think to myself well it makes sense why my 2:2 makes sense and take into consideration my history.
And even angrier because despite @BPSOfficial and @UKDCP have spoken about “Addressing EDI and anti-racism in the profession of clinical psychology and in the DCP” - August 2020 Chair’s Update.
But for some reason they refuse to consider the attainment gap in grades for BAME students trying to get into CP. Like two universities out of 30 offer an entry requirement that doesn’t measure to a 2:1 or 1st. Of 2:2 with MSc or PhD.
Like seriously. How are we meant to make Psychology/ Clinical Psychology more diverse if Universities/ BPS guidelines can not take into consideration the barriers faced by BAME students in the first place and actively try and break down the barriers.
