If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late was released nearly 6 years ago by hip hop megastar Drake. To me, it’s his best project and one of the best ever. Today I’m here to talk about the project a little bit, hope you enjoy.
I’m going to be reviewing this project in a different way, splitting it up into sections instead of talking about a few tracks.
A heavily debated subject about this project is whether it’s an album or if it’s a mixtape. Drake himself calls it a mixtape but some people say it’s an album so he could get out of his cash money deal. The length of the album also suggests the former.
Beginning (3 tracks):

Legend
Energy
10 Bands

Drake starts this album off with an absolute bang, Legend starts off slowly, with a more soothing vibe and then the beat drops into a more trap sound where Drake reinstates his legendary status in the hook.
On Energy, Drake comes in with a cutthroat & aggressive mood on a dark beat. Talking about his lifestyle, the enemies he has and the overall energy is flawlessly executed and really puts you in a “fuck you” type of mood. 10 Bands also comes in with a trap sound
10 Bands also comes in with a trap sound, the ear piercing snares and hard hitting drums matches perfectly with Drake’s style of his more braggadocios rap style. Overall these 3 tracks set the tone for this project with the trap, aggressiveness and r&b sounds sprayed on here.
Meat of the project (5 tracks):

Know Yourself
No Tellin’
Madonna
6 God
Star 67

The way Drake comes on very calm at first and then the beat switches into the sample of “Tinted Glass” and he drops one of his most iconic choruses.
He comes onto it with some great rapping makes it one of my favourite Drake tracks. No Tellin’ shows off his versatility in only 5 minutes, he starts off with an aggressive style then switches into a lighter style with a bit of singing mixed in there and vocals in the background.
Madonna is obviously inspired from the legendary artist. This is one of my favourite productions on the track, I love the way he switches from the hard hitting tracks to the nice lighter tracks while maintaining the rapping and dark vibe.
He also mixes in the singing and his own “flare” to round off this excellent track. 6 God, this is my favourite Drake production ever. Using “Haunted Chase” from Donkey Kong and perfectly backing up the name with a hard hitting, scary and vicious energy on this track makes it
one of my favourite songs on the album. I really like how Drake provides us with a few slow, aggressive bars to match up with the instrumental over the sample. Star 67 went from dark to light in a seemingly effortless way. Managing to keep you entertained,
Drake started off with some lighter rapping for nearly two minutes then captured your ears with some catchy bars and then the wonderful chorus leading to the last verse with Drake singing to the end.
Now that we’ve finished with the meat of the project, let’s talk about 6 man. Drake comes in right from the jump with some force, dropping some big names in clever ways. The main one being legendary 6th man, Lou Williams, celebrity Guy Fieri, horror movie slasher Michael Myers
and NBA all star DeMarcus Cousins.
Ending (3 tracks):

You & The 6
Jungle
6PM In New York

You & The 6 is basically a conversation with Drake’s mom where they talk about his lifestyle, his dad and his childhood. This was a really beautiful track over a wonderful beat and portrays the emotional and reminiscing
side of Drake. Talking about how his mother and Toronto raised him right and providing the backstory on a wide range of topics makes this a really powerful track. Jungle is one of Drake’s best songs, he comes in with his R&B style and pours his emotion onto this track.
Following up with a track about one relationship, he adds on with another beautiful track which showcases one of his best talents. The emotion, light beat with some hard hitting drums and Drake matching that with a stronger tone in his R&B voice makes this track one of his best.
6PM In New York is one of his best lyrical performances. The fast beat showcases the lavish New York lifestyle. Adding on to that theme with bars about his money, superstar status, life and relationship and forming those into clever bars makes this my favourite on IYRTITL.
Overall, the versatility, production, sampling choices, aggressiveness and versatility are what make this project so amazing. Thank you for reading this thread, I hope you enjoyed!
