Three months ago, I was hate crimed in New York City while sitting outside a Chinese restaurant. In the past week or so, a teenager shoved a Thai grandpa so hard, I watched him die on camera. In the past week or so, a police officer shot and murdered an Asian kid for no reason.
Yesterday, I saw a man wearing a white supremacist symbol openly. What has been the response from the activist community? Where is the public outrage? Where is the community support??
#LunarNewYear is one of the most important holidays for us. Next week, we are meant to be celebrating and yet we are living in fear. Our communities take filial piety very seriously.
So when people attack our elderly, it is more than a hate crime to us, but a direct attack on our culture and our values. How much of a fucking coward can you be to attack AN OLD PERSON?
I have not seen ANY coverage on social media besides Asian run activism platforms. It really feels like we support everyone and when we need it, y’all turn your backs on us. This past year, it’s really shown us WHO is a true “activist”.
I, for one, notice which celebrities, activists, mentors, etc speak out in support of our communities. And I have lost so much respect for so many of those I used to look up to.
And somehow some of yalls response is just “well Asians are anti black”. Like ?? ALL PEOPLE HAVE WORK TO DO. I’m not denying that there is work for the Asian community to do at all. And y’all may not like the next part of this, but I feel it needs to be said.
One thing that I’ve noticed especially, is that many of the attacks on our people is not by white folks, but Black and Brown. This is not in any way to suggest that they are “more likely to do crime” or “dangerous”.
But when I ask your communities to hold your people accountable, it’s because y’all have done something wrong. Just like you would ask us to hold our own people accountable. It is not anti black to ask for accountability.
The final point I want to make is that we are not included in spaces, period. In articles on how the pandemic has hit POC communities, it almost *never* focuses on the Asian community. Did y’all know Filipino nurses are dying at a much higher rate?
There is nearly zero coverage on how the pandemic is affecting our community’s economy. And that’s not even to mention the racism that y’all are being complicit in. Be better. Support us socially, economically, politically. That’s all we ask.
