this is now an ongoing thread for my 2021 books with comments/recommendations
1. The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda (mystery/thriller)
Tbh kinda forgettable, interesting enough that I finished it but now I can't remember anything or any character's names even lol, I think I started speed reading halfway through to be done with it faster. Don't recommend

2. The Passengers by John Marrs (thriller)
This one moves so fast and has short chapters, often ending with cliffhangers or key reveals. Not the fanciest or most literary book of all time but just easy to read and fun, I recommend if you like Black Mirror/fast-paced books

3. Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson (mystery)
Teenage boarding school detective story mixing present day and history, definitely feels like YA but that doesn't mean it's not fun.
Def recommend for people who enjoy YA, like academic settings for books, enjoy mystery

7. The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict (historical fiction)
Pretty short and a solidly entertaining read esp if you are an Agatha Christie fan. I spent an equal amount of time reading the actual book and reading stuff online to learn more about the actual history lol

13. Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid (fiction told mainly through interviews)
the audiobook has a full cast and it's done so well. follows a fictional band from the 1970s and it made me Feel Emotions (yes I cried)

14. Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid (fiction)
read this right after Daisy Jones and it's not as good but still fun. told in two alternating timelines and feels like a popcorny romcom
yes, recommend, it's entertaining- but read other TJR first if you haven't

15. Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo (YA historical fiction)
Set in 1950s Chinatown and centers around a lesbian romance/coming of age story, recommend if that description catches your attention and if you like YA

16. Wilder Girls by Rory Power (sci-fi/horror YA)
this one has such an interesting premise (mysterious disease causes a group of girls to be quarantined on an island, feels like lord of the flies a bit) but the actual book was paced weirdly and it fell flat for me

17. Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (contemporary romance)

19. The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix (horror)
warning that this isn't as light and fluffy as the cover seems! It does get horror-y, but I thought the setting and characters worked well. Recommend for horror fans, but tw for some sexual violence

20. Ash by Malinda Lo (fairy tale retelling)
I was hopeful when I saw this described as a lesbian retelling of Cinderella but this one was honestly pretty boring and I probably would've DNF it if it hadn't been so short.
Bonus points bc the MC almost has the same name as me
