Let me try this another way.....
When people in prison "RIOT" they know they are not going to "WIN" in the end.....they have gotten to the point where it is the only option left to them and where LOSING while retaining some pride and dignity matters more than simply surviving

They know they might die
They know they will probably get beaten
They know they will be put in solitary
They know they will lose privileges
And they know security forces will win
And they rise up anyway....that should tell you something

A WIN for them is having their greivances addressed and usually EVERY OTHER AVENUE has been foreclosed to them.
That is why it is so sad that the initial media response is always of "out of control" incarcerated people and officers restoring order....it is NONSENSE

Riots in prison are usually organized protests using the only thing people in prison are left with themselves and each other.....these things happen for good reasons, and over the years, investigation has always borne that out
I believe in non-violence, but you have to understand, it can get really bad in prisons and especially jails....really incredible abuses of power are common....getting solidarity across very diverse interests is not easy and the price paid after is usually very high
To get a large number of people in prison or jail to unify and work together usually demonstrates that a) something bad enough to unify people who rarely work together was going on and b) it was bad enough for all of them to risk beatings, solitary, and even death to protest
But, I certainly agree, we should find better ways to do things....I would suggest that starts with better and more reliable procedures for addressing legitimate grievances
