Write that backstory. Write it all.
It may not belong in your BOOK... in fact it probably doesn't.
But it will come through on the page so much clearer if you give yourself the freedom to fully explore its impact & how it shapes your characters.

Never be afraid to write thousands and thousands of words that do not add to your book's word count. A 100k book takes way more than 100k to create. It takes so much more exploration and study than your readers will ever see.

Because that IS the goal: let your readers forget you, and become your characters.

And never be afraid to CUT those words if they sneak in but do not further the story. They inform your character. Your character will inform the reader thru their experiences in the here and now.
