THREAD: #Myanmarprotests Day Two. Tens of thousands of people – potentially millions – took to the streets to protest the military takeover in Myanmar. Here’s what I’ve discovered… 1/7 #HearTheVoiceOfMyanmar #WhatishappeninginMyanmar #myanmarmilitarycoup #AungSanSuuKyi #Myanmar
There’s huge concern about the spread of misinformation especially when the internet is down. Connectivity remained low – 14% - for most of the morning. It was partly restored at 2pm local time. See graph by @netblocks… 2/7
Once the internet came back, I was hit with a surge of requests from young people who – understandably – want their voices heard. We spoke to two brothers who had this to say… thank you for your bravery. 3/7
The protests have remained largely peaceful. This video was shared with me from Monywa in the Sagaing Division by @ThwinHtooSan11. It shows locals chanting in unity – calling for a peaceful return to democracy. 4/7
But then there was this. Police fired shots to break up a rally in the southern town of Myawaddy. There are no reports of injury but it sets the tone. The situation remains fragile. 5/7
Here is a collection of powerful images and artwork. I particularly like the cartoon – You Messed with the Wrong Generation. The majority of protestors are young and passionate about democracy. 6/7
I’ve been told the protests will continue tomorrow and the fight for freedom will not stop until #AungSanSuuKyi is released and her power restored. The military have not made any public comment. But we are waiting for an explanation... 7/7
