We're being too complacent about GB News. Yes, obviously there is going to be a great deal of self-selection. But because the broadcaster's market segment is well defined from the start, they can push that audience even further without fear of alienating viewers. https://twitter.com/chriscurtis94/status/1358433191728730113
FOX News is the largest broadcaster in the US. The Mail Online is the most popular online news site in the UK. Are they only for politics obsessives? No. Do viewers self-select by political partisanship? Yes. Do they still reinforce extreme partisanship? Also yes.
I honestly can't understand how anyone vaguely aware of what has happened to the political information environment in the last 25 years can look at a multi-million investment in a pro-government partisan broadcaster and think "this is going to be just fine".
Part of the problem here is that the only point of reference for English speakers is Fox News, which is treated as a one-of-a-kind American curiosity, while not realising the role corporate broadcasters consistently play in shoring up extreme partisanship around the world.
