I’ve been asked about “how to use TikTok” and I want to try and share my thoughts in this thread! Necessary disclaimer: this has been my personal experience as a tabletop content creator. TikTok is my main platform. (1/12)
My first piece of advice is — actually use it. You can tell when a content creator genuinely uses TikTok. You’ll stay up-to-date on the trends and nuances that you wouldn’t be able to pick up on otherwise.
I like to think of the formula to succeed as a two parter. PART 1 is make good content. In my opinion, “good content” is genuine, engaging, and consistent.
Like a lot of other video platforms, you do better if you show your face. People want to connect with you and it’s easier if they feel like they’re face-to-face with you.

Let your personality show! Be unapologetically yourself. People can pick up on ingenuity.
Be consistent. (Allegedly) the algorithm prefers when you post on the frequent side. I try to post every day, but every video doesn’t need to be a minute long production. I have fun, short ones in between! When I have downtime I like to pre-film multiple videos to post later.
If you truly want to succeed on TikTok, you have to put the work in. It’s difficult to gain traction when you’re just recycling/cross-posting content, especially when it’s content not formatted for TikTok. (for example, a landscape video in a portrait frame)
Even if you do x, y, and z, the truth is the algorithm also has to pick up on your content. Which is PART 2, appeal to the algorithm!

Engagement is HUGE. People engage with your videos by watching it, sharing it with their peers, commenting, and liking.
Things that have been rumored to appease the algorithm: using trending sounds, using trending hashtags (but not too many, and make sure to also use hashtags related to your niche), shorter videos = longer watch time, & using TikTok filters and features.
Here is a general table found off Google on good times to post, however it will depend on the audience you cultivate! My audience is mostly in the U.S. so I try to post when people are out of work/school.
Going viral can happen to anyone at anytime, and sometimes for what seems like any reason. I gained most of my followers in a week because I had back to back (to back) videos get over 1M views. I have not had a video do that well since.
The more you post and the longer you use the app, the more you’ll get a feel for what will perform well. That’s something difficult to convey.

Sometimes you’ll post a video and it’ll flop. Don’t let that discourage you, it happens! Not every video can be a hit.
And that’s the end of my lil thread! I hope I was able to provide some insight. If you have any more specific questions, feel free to reply or message me. TikTok can do WONDERS for you and your brand if you put the effort in to learn it. :)
Oh wait, I guess I’ll put in a little 🔌

Here is my TikTok. Started making content in August 2020. I’ve recently slowed down to focus on other platforms (and school!) but am still proud of my channel. 😊 https://TikTok.com/@1minuteboardgames
