You know what happens when we don’t normalize disability in stories? We grow up thinking that disabled people are few & far between. And you know what comes after that? Mindsets like “it’s okay, only the disabled are vulnerable...& they’re few & far between so it doesn’t matter.”
2/ When you don’t see disability in its many, MANY variations on the regular, it’s easy to believe that disability is a binary—either you’re incapacitated or you’re fine. And it’s easy to believe that you aren’t affected by this. But the truth is—disability is everywhere.
3/ And our responsibilities to each other have no end. It isn’t just “it’s fine because vulnerable people will die but you’re healthy so you’re okay”. We all have a responsibility to understand and work toward this wider world in which we live. We must take care of each other.
4/ The COVID fatigue that we’re seeing from the non-disabled world is directly linked to the belief that disabled ppl don’t matter because they’re too small a portion of the population to matter to everyday life. That just simply isn’t true.
