cumali has always been a complex multi-layered character whose world has been shaped by his parents since childhood. as the eldest son, he was raised to believe and obey whatever they tell him. in his mind, they are always right; and therefore, they say, and he directly obeys.
he didn’t get the chance to fix this thinking because he spent years in prison, surrounded by four walls. so he went in and came out carrying the same mindset. he never allowed himself to question his parents’ behaviors because as a child, he was taught not to.
in fact, cumali’s actions show that his motivation is to get his parents’ approval and make them proud. he is willing to do anything, and i repeat: anything, in order to please them. this is where things get messy, because he can even do things out of character for his parents.
there’s no doubt that cumali behaved out of character last week. koskoca cumali koçovali who’s not afraid of the truth and is willing to spit it in everyone’s face rather than hide behind a lie, for the first time ever, he lied.
yes it is unlike himself but if we consider his deep admiration for his parents, it could actually make sense. since his mother told everyone to lie, he did exactly that without arguing, because in his mind, she’s always right.
he didn’t think of the consequences. in this case, he saw his brother sad but he thought it was for the best and he’d eventually get over it. it never crossed his mind that his mother could be wrong and there could be consequences,so yes he behaved unlike himself, for his mother
but when yamaç found out and was ready to go, he asked cumali, "what would you do if you were in my place?" and here sultan’s effect dissolved and cumali’s true character stepped in. he realized that no matter what the consequences would be, he’d do the same thing for his family
so yes, cumali lied. but this is just a small part of the bigger picture that this man’s whole world was shaped by his parents, and he was never allowed to think otherwise. he’s willing to do everything for them, even if he had to sacrifice one of his greatest qualities: honesty
this does not necessarily justify why he lied, it rather gives an understanding of his reasoning and thinking. he made a mistake, but who doesn’t? isn’t that part of being a human? but rest assured that if he had known what was to come, he would’ve been by yamaç’s side.
if you made it this far, then i hope this gave you a better understanding of cumali’s character and thinking. he can make mistakes, but that doesn’t disregard his whole story. thank you for coming to my mini-psychology lesson.
