Mask / non-mask school mandate announced on Thursday
You wander into your favourite restaurant - buzzing with excited noise.
Young adults sit around - all unmasked - at tables of 6 - eagerly working together, exchanging ideas and laughs.
What would you think? #bced 2/
2/ Change the setting.

What is described is a 21st C classroom. The reality of most teachers in BC

Kids no longer sit at “workstations” - they are active, involved, and excited to learn 3/
3/ Listening to the PHO / MoE on Thursday took me back a bit

It reminded me of what I heard of before my time when sitting in rows with desks tied together by 2x4s and an ink well in a little hole on the desktop. 4/
4/ It was a time before collaboration was the norm. A time of rote memory and knowledge base learning. A time of worksheets and drills. It was normal then. It is not now.

Back to 21st C learning. Much closer resembling that restaurant mentioned above. 5/
5/ It is not good enough just stuffing children and adults into a building.
To improve mental health and make sure learning is taking place this building needs activity, collaboration, building of community and energy.

Can this be done during a pandemic.
Yes.
How? 6/
6/ Implement a full time mask mandate for all.
Admit cohorts are a facade.
Rid the myth that there are other layers of protection.
Invest $ into proper ventilation in every classroom.
Invest $ in smaller classes. 7/
7/ The question is not can it be done. The question is - does the BC government care enough to do it and does society care enough to demand it.

We did not hear this from the MoE on Thursday. We heard platitudes. We heard sitting at “workstations”. 8/
8/ We heard we can do this together but “we won't be there or put any money into it at the provincial level.” So much for together. As long as it does not involve them.

We heard that she just does not care.

Time to care. This is not just about teachers. 9/
9/ This is about every person who walks through the door and families and friends they have contact with.
This is about giving those who work and learn in the building a fighting chance to continue work that supports the physical, academic and mental health of everyone. 10/
10/ This is about investing in our children and families.

This is about caring.

Please care enough to demand better.
