1/The main vaccine candidates' race for approval is almost finished and now we need them all available to every country with open sharing of the processes for production, quality assurance, and distribution.
2/ Many, if not all, have no private R/D costs as most/all were financed by various governments. Vaccine production must be decentralized to allow production around the world if we are to ever get ahead of the various mutations.
4/ Up until December it appeared COVID mutated slowly and lacked effective evasion strategies but that has all changed. We need worldwide manufacturing capability for every vaccine as they *all* appear to prevent death and severe illness.
5/ With almost every country on Earth experiencing a vaccine shortage this is the only way forward.
We have reduced regulatory approval to months to save lives by approving these vaccines under EUAs,
6/ and we now need global coalitions of drug manufacturers all producing the vaccines to expedite supply and resolve distribution issues.
Developers must license their vaccines to domestic manufacturers that have the capability to produce the vaccines.
7/ This is the only hope we have to eliminate COVID because the pandemic is here until it's stopped *everywhere*.
Currently, we are using a very tiny percentage of worldwide manufacturing capacity which is inexcusable.
8/ We must allow countries to purchase *licenses* rather than *doses.*
In an unprecedented global health emergency, surely the elimination of COVID and saving millions of lives transcends any idea of profit?
9/ The recent Sanofi/BioNTech co-operation is a good start. We need much, much more of this.
Sanofi/GSK has a global capacity of at least 1.7 billion doses as of 2015.
10/ Edward Murrow asked Jonas Salk who owned the patent to the polio vaccine. “Well, the people, I would say,” Salk said. “There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?”
Governments funded R/D with our money and in the race to eliminate the virus, this is the only way we can win.
11/ CEPI says 200 biopharma or sterile vaccine production companies are capable of vaccine production.
This is satire as it won't happen and there's still a good shot at a glut of vaccines by summer.
BUT if we need to tweak for variants and to be ready for the next pandemic...
