THREAD - @springsteen first ever TV commercial offically airs tonight during #SuperBowl - does it matter? 1/7
/ On one level, no. It’s an ad. Beautifully shot with a reunification message post-Trump. Bruce was never gonna do a straight-up Amex commercial with flames shooting out of this guitar
/ Jeep played it well. They built a relationship with Bruce and pitched him a cinematic arthouse project. Nothing too commercial.
/ But let’s not forgot, Bruce Inc. is a business. Apart from the sale of the Letter To You film to Apple+, new income streams are limited in Covid. Record sales and streaming fees are pretty much zero these days cash wise
/ Should Bruce have done it? On one hand, why the hell not - it’s free money. Everyone likes money, and we got rinsed on Broadway, so there’s precedent
/ But on the other hand wouldn’t it have been better for Jeep (and the rest of corporate America) to redirect the colossal sums it spends on dumb ads to supporting the victims of Covid?
/ This is where it get murky for Bruce. Jeep and Bruce don’t seem to support a good, charitable cause here and that’s a miss. A big miss.
/ If they are supporting a good cause, and not just selling a non-electric, gas-guzzling, 2-ton truck on finance then OK
