Sometimes I need approach #2 - LINE & COLOUR. This takes much longer *in the early phase*, and while it may save time later it does make sketch edits potentially more time-consuming.
I use this when colour is a critical element and I need a client's approval on *colour* choices.

Lines->approval->colour->approval->final->approval is a clunky process, so I try to put lines and colour together when colour is a critical elemnent.
I can do this because I ask for clear briefs and reference before beginning, which makes the process smoother for everyone.
