Alright, let's take SKETCH -> FINAL seriously.

I have 2 approaches, which I'll illustrate with commission work.

This is #1 - LINEWORK ONLY. Edits can be made quickly, and the client sees the shape and details of what final will be. I prefer this. However...
Sometimes I need approach #2 - LINE & COLOUR. This takes much longer *in the early phase*, and while it may save time later it does make sketch edits potentially more time-consuming.

I use this when colour is a critical element and I need a client's approval on *colour* choices.
Lines->approval->colour->approval->final->approval is a clunky process, so I try to put lines and colour together when colour is a critical elemnent.

I can do this because I ask for clear briefs and reference before beginning, which makes the process smoother for everyone.
But sometimes, with C7 work, I paint over someone else's sketch (or they paint over my sketch). This is my painting from Scott Purdy's pencils (L) and over Matteo Spirito's lines (R). Collaboration is great fun if you swap at sketch stage 🙂
