2/7/1801-7/12/1881 Ovid Butler Section 6 Lot 14 GPS (39.8199708, -86.1746097) Born in New York, Butler practiced law in Shelbyville from 1825-1836 before moving to Indianapolis and being a partner in a firm with Calvin Fletcher. But he left law in 1849, citing health reasons.
Whatever his ailments, leaving his practice seems to have cured them, for his next 31 years were his most productive, with work in journalism, the anti-slavery movement, and most importantly, in founding a university with Disciples of Christ affiliations he named Northwestern
Christian University, serving as its president from 1851-1871 before it changed its name to Butler University in 1877. His home near 14th and College still stands.
