Responsible honest patriotism, rooted in love for all is better than an historically amnesiac one that ignores current and past injustices & inequality. Most white people think the Empire was a force for good. That’s not the case across our multicultural society. 2/
So while polls may show equal levels of patriotism across backgrounds it depends on the question asked. Dig deeper and you find a different picture. That’s why we need to first unpack patriotism before we can celebrate it, as @labourlewis says. 3/
Because Britain is used to telling lies about itself. About identity, divide & rule, the class struggle & other histories. Embracing the flag without context is simply perpetuating those lies, as well as feeding the racism & xenophobia attached to the flag. 4/
We need a narrative that underpins a multicultural, inclusive & honest patriotism compatible with the right kind of internationalism, while making the arguments against a nativist small island, dishonest patriotism. 5/5
